NEWIN冷却塔诚邀您莅临第十四届菲律宾机械展览会(Philippine Machinery Exhibition 2026)
Why do semiconductor cooling towers strongly prefer 316L stainless steel? Because the cooling water in a semiconductor cooling tower directly or indirectly participates in process heat exchange, and any metal ion leaching may enter the ultrapure water system or process equipment with the cooling water, ultimately affecting wafer yield. Therefore, material selection for semiconductor cooling towers must eliminate the risk of metal ion leaching at the source.

Anti-Leaching Principle of 316L Stainless Steel
316L contains molybdenum (Mo ~2–3%), offering higher pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) than 304 stainless steel, with a more stable passive film in chloride-containing and weak acid environments
The dense Cr₂O₃ passive film on stainless steel surfaces isolates the base metal from cooling water, reducing ion leaching rates by orders of magnitude
316L is low-carbon, avoiding intergranular chromium depletion in heat-affected zones during welding/processing, preventing ion leaching from intergranular corrosion
For these reasons, semiconductor cooling towers should use 316L stainless steel for all parts in contact with cooling water—coils, basins, frames—rather than galvanized steel or carbon steel. This is also one of the core requirements that distinguishes semiconductor industry cooling systems from ordinary industrial cooling.
Closed-loop cooling tower: Source Isolation, Not Post-Treatment
![]()
Open cooling towers expose cooling water directly to the atmosphere, allowing particulates, dust, and microorganisms to continuously enter and concentrate. For semiconductor applications, this is an inherent design flaw—stream filtration and chemical treatment are merely "remedies" that cannot eliminate source contamination, and biocides or corrosion inhibitors may themselves introduce new impurities.
The core value of a closed cooling tower is source isolation: process cooling water circulates in a closed loop within coils, completely isolated from spray water and air. The heat transfer path is:
Process cooling water → convection inside coil → conduction through coil wall → evaporation of spray water film → carried away by air
Circulating water is not exposed to air → no introduction of particulates or microorganisms
No chemical addition to circulating water → no chemical contamination sources
Even if water quality changes on the spray side, it only affects evaporation efficiency, not the process side. This is the reliable engineering implementation of the semiconductor "clean closed-loop." Even if an open cooling tower is paired with a plate heat exchanger, initial investment and system complexity increase significantly, and cross-contamination risk remains.
NEWIN Semiconductor Cooling Tower: NWN-S All-Stainless Closed Cooling Tower
The NWN-S all-stainless closed cooling tower is the product realization of this principle: frame, coils, and basin are fully stainless steel, with 316L coils passing ASTM B117 2,000-hour salt spray tests with no corrosion, ensuring cooling water never contacts carbon steel or galvanized materials. All surfaces in contact with cooling water are 316L/304 stainless steel, eliminating metal ion contamination at the source.
